- 中国 传统史书的一种体裁。特点是按时间顺序编排史实。
《竹书纪年》、《春秋》为 中国 最早的编年体史书。 汉 司马迁 改编年为纪传， 汉 荀悦 又改纪传为编年，自是纪传与编年并行。至 宋 司马光 撰《资治通鉴》，上起 周威王 二十二年，下迄 五代 末，前后1362年，以通史编年，成为编年体史书的巨著。编年体以年月为经，以事实为纬，容易看出同时期各事件之间的联系，但记事前后分隔，首尾难以联贯，历史人物的生平和典章制度等也不易详其源委。
